1877 Died. 'The death is announced of Mr. G. Holmes, under whose superintendence the Lyttelton Tunnel, connecting the interior of the province of Canterbury, New Zealand, with the port, was constructed. Energetic, skilful, and self-reliant, Mr. Holmes - well seconded by his partner Mr. Edward Richardson - undertook the work, and carried it through with great success. The next work of the partners was the construction of some 20 miles of the Canterbury railways. After the completion of this contract Mr. Holmes settled down to the life of a colonist.'[1]
