G. R. Wray, MScTech, PhD, FTI, Fellow, was an engineering apprentice in 1943 with Bennis Combustion Ltd, Bolton, and began his association with textile machinery with Dobson and Barlow Ltd, Bolton, in 1946. He studied for HNC and G/MechE part-time at Bolton Technical College before entering Manchester University as a Sir Walter Preston scholar where he graduated BScTech(Hons) in 1949.
He was subsequently employed as a development engineer on man-made fibre processing machinery with Platts (Barton) Ltd, and with TMM (Research) Ltd, and later lectured in Mechanical Engineering at Bolton Technical College.
From 1955 he was Lecturer in Textile Engineering at UMIST, where he gained his MScTech and PhD, and became Reader in Mechanical Engineering at Loughborough University of Technology in 1966. He was granted a personal Chair in Mechanical Engineering at the University in 1970.
Professor Wray was awarded the First Viscount Weir prize for the best graduate's paper of this Institution in 1958, and recently has been jointly awarded the Water Arbitration prize for a paper on reduction of impact noise at the design stage which was published in the Institution proceedings. He was a founder member of the Manipulative and Mechanical Handling Machinery Group Committee, and currently serves as Chairman of the Group. He was a member of the Council of the Institution from 1965-1968. He is also a Fellow of the Textile Institute and has served on many of that Institute's committees.
