"Lt.-Colonel GEOFFREY LLEWELLYN HINDS HOWELL, C.M.G., was born in 1875 and educated at Marlborough and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He was gazetted to a commission in the Royal Field Artillery in 1895, and served in the South African War from 1899 to 1902, partly in the Royal Horse Artillery. He retired in 1906 and became a director of Messrs. Legros and Knowles, motor car manufacturers, London. Subsequently he was associated with the Metallurgic Car Co, of France, as their agent in Great Britain. At the outbreak of war in 1914 he returned to the forces and served with distinction in France in the mechanical transport, being eventually in charge of the whole of the motor bus organization. He was mentioned five times in despatches, specially thanked for his services by the Commander-in-Chief, and created C.M.G. After the war he again retired from the Service and settled in Tobago, British West Indies, where his death occurred on 19th November 1948. Colonel Howell had been an Associate of the Institution of Automobile Engineers since 1907."
