After receiving his education at the Kew Cross Royal Naval School, he was appointed on the 3rd of April, 1853, as a midshipman in the Indian Navy, in which he served until its abolition on the 30th of April, 1863, when he was retired as a lieutenant, and transferred to the Indian Marine, in which, in 1883, he was granted the title of captain. . . .[more]
