George Clark (1861-1937)

From Graces Guide

George Clark (1861-1937) of Clark and Sons and later of Saxone Shoe Co

1937 Died. 'Mr George Clark, chairman and Managing director of the Saxone Shoe Co. (Ltd.). Kilmarnock, died yesterday at his residence, 11 Crosbie Road, Troon. Mr Clark, who was in his 69th year, had been for many years one of Kilmarnock's leaders of industry. He was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, his father having business interests in South America. The foundations of the Saxone Shoe Co. were laid in the early part of last century by Mr Clark's grandfather. Up till the end of the 19th century, the firm's manufactures were all exported, but the raising of tariff walls in overseas countries compelled them to find home markets for their products. Under Mr Clark's chairmanship, the Company, about 35 years ago, embarked on a policy of opening retail shops in all the principal centres of the country. The business has gone on steadily extending and the Saxone Shoe Co. is now one of the largest employers of labour in Kilmarnock. Mr Clark was, for many years chairman of an associated boot manufacturing company in Brazil.'[1]
