1960 Died. 'THE death occurred at Torbay Hospital on Wednesday, of Mr. George Edward Hider, of Hope Cottage. Marine Drive. He was 84. Born in Stogumber, near Watchet, in Somerset, the son of a Baptist minister, Mr. Hider came to Paignton when his father took charge of the Winner Street Baptist Church. and attended a private school in Hyde Road. He remembered much of old Paignton and was able to recall practice cannons being fired out to sea from the old fort which later came part of the Redcliffe Hotel. From 1922 until he retired a few years ago, Mr. Hider was proprietor of a firm of mechanical engineers at the Upton Foundry in Parkfield Road. An extremely well read man, he was keenly interested in French literature. A Rotarian for many years. Mr. Hider will probably be best remembered for his interest in swimming and life-saving. He was a former chairman of the Torquay Leander club and as far back as 1915 was South Devon representative of the Royal Life-Saving Society of which he was made an honorary life governor. He was also a member of Devon Amateur Swimming Association for 30 years and from 1927 to 1936 was its development and education secretary.'[2]
