"GEORGE EDWIN GOODWIN was born in 1883, and received his education at the Salford Technical College. After serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. L. Gardner and Sons, Ltd., and Messrs. Browett, Lindley and Company, Ltd., between 1900 and 1904, he was for two years in the employment of the Westinghouse Company, Ltd., of Trafford Park. He then held short appointments as toolmaker to various firms in the Manchester area before becoming, in 1914, machine-shop foreman to Messrs. Mirrlees, Bickerton and Day, Ltd., at Stockport.
After acting as supervisor in the training department of the Ministry of Munitions for the Midland area for two years, he accepted the appointment of general works superintendent at the Ministry of Labour's instructional factory at Birmingham, with responsibility for the training of some 3,500 men. He relinquished this position in 1925 and joined the staff of Messrs. Edgar Vaughan and Company, Ltd., of Birmingham, as technical sales engineer, with whom he remained to the end of his career. Mr. Goodwin had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1927. His death occurred on 4th May 1949."
