GEORGE ORMSBY POTTER was born at Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo, on 5th May 1877.
He received private tuition in his native place, and afterwards studied at the Methodist College, Belfast, and the West of Scotland Technical College, Glasgow.
In October 1894 he commenced an apprenticeship at the locomotive works of Messrs. Dubs and Co., of Glasgow, and on its completion in 1899 he was employed for a short time in the works of the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. at Govan.
In June 1900 ho went as mechanic in the running sheds of the Caledonian Railway at St. Rollox, Glasgow, and after a year and a half spent in this capacity he proceeded to British Guiana, where he was engaged as locomotive foreman on the Demerara Railway. In the following year he became acting locomotive superintendent for a short time, and was subsequently promoted in 1903 to the post of locomotive, carriage, and wagon superintendent.
His death took place at Bournemouth from phthisis contracted in Georgetown, Demerara, on 19th May 1907, at the age of thirty.
He became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1904.
