George Roberts

1947 - Fifty-four years' service with the same firm came to an end with the recent retirement from Bovis, Ltd., of Mr. George Roberts at the age of 74. He started in 1892 with Mr. C. W. Bovis, who then had a small London building business employing a handful of men and boys. They had only one cart and horse for heavy work; other equipment was taken to the site by hand truck. Twenty years ago Mr . Roberts was put in control of the paint stores. "Things were very different then," he says. "Painters had to mend their own brushes and mix their own colours. They did not have the modern advantages of colour cards and ready-made paints in tins." He adds, "Perhaps it is a weakness of human nature to consider the good old days as better than the present. It seems to me that craftsmanship was more in evidence years ago." Mr. Roberts' jubilee with the firm was marked by an invitation to the Lord Mayor of London's Banquet. The Lord Mayor was Sir Samuel Joseph, then managing director of Bovis, Ltd."[1]
