George Shillibeer (d.1944) of Burrator Reservoir
1944 Died. 'The death Mr. George Shillibeer, former custodian of Barrator Reservoir for years, is reminder of the fact that for generations the family, of Sheepstor, have been associated with Plymouth's water supply. Mr. George Shillibeer succeeded his father as custodian of the Reservoir, and in turn was succeeded by his brother Mr. W. H. Shillibeer, who still holds the position. Born in the valley at Head Weir Cottage, he decided to follow his forebears, and "take to the water." In 1893 he was among those who cleared the site, and excavated for the foundation of Barrator Dam. When the work was completed he was appointed assistant to his father who died few years ago, over the age of 90 On the amalgamation was appointed bailiff with his brother as his assistant. Mr. George Shillibeer leaves a widow, who went to Sheepstor from Sidmouth to assistant to her mother, who was headmistress of Sheepstor School. '[1]
