George Street Bridge, Newport

This was the first modern cable-stayed bridge in the UK. Crosses the River Usk. Grade II* listed.

Designed by Mott, Hay and Anderson and and the Borough Engineer D P Cartwright.

Contractor: Cleveland Bridge and Engineering Co.

Opened in 1964.

500 ft span. Slender steel deck (just 4.5 ft deep at centre).

48 cables, 3" diameter. Hollow concrete pylons 165 ft high.
