"GEORGE WILLIAM BARTLE was in the service of Messrs. Mann, Crossman and Paulin, Ltd., brewers, London, for forty years.
He was born in 1869 and served his apprenticeship at the Vulcan Iron Works, in Hull, from 1883 to 1891, meanwhile attending classes in engineering at the Young People's Institute. After some experience as a fitter he joined the Peninsula and Oriental Steam Shipping Company's service as marine engineer and eventually obtained his Extra First-Class Board of Trade Certificate. He began his long association with Messrs. Mann, Crossman and Paulin in 1898 with the post of chief engineer and became manager of the works department in 1925. His responsibilities as chief engineer and later as works manager included the provision of new refrigerating, milling, and pumping machinery, in addition to new bottling stores and a large fleet of motor vehicles. He retired from Messrs. Mann, Crossman and Paulin in 1938. Mr. Bartle, whose death occurred on 31st December 1947, was a member of the Institution for forty nine years, having been elected an Associate Member in 1898 and transferred to Membership in 1930."
