Gordon and Macphail

From Graces Guide

Whisky bottlers and distillers, of Elgin

1895 The business was established by James Gordon and John Alexander Macphail in South Street, Elgin, initially as wholesale grocers and wine merchants. John Urquhart soon joined the business and developed an expertise in the purchase and maturing of whiskies from the Speyside region in sherry casks. He became the senior partner in 1915 and Urquhart family members occupied numerous roles in the business down to the present day. The firm established its position as the leading independent bottler of malt whiskies.

1962 Speymalt Whisky Distributors Limited was incorporated, trading as Gordon and Macphail.

1991 The business moved from above the South Street shop to custom built offices and duty paid warehouses nearby.

1993 The business purchased Benromach Distillery and thus fulfilled a long-held wish to own a distillery. After extensive refurbishment, Benromach re-opened in 1998.

2010 The company launched Generations Mortlach 70 Years Old, the world's oldest bottled single malt Scotch whisky. This was followed by two releases of 70 year old Glenlivet and a 75 year old Mortlach.
