Great Kei Bridge (South Africa)

Komgha district, Eastern Cape.
This is a wrought iron lattice girder road bridge completed in 1879. Eleven pairs of wrought iron circular iron columns, filled with concrete, support the twelve spans (each approx. 28.5 m long).
The ironwork was produced by Westwood, Baillie and Co of London.
Built for the Public Works Dept of the Cape Colony. Joseph Newey was the Architect; George Berkley was the Engineer.
A timber rail bridge a short distance downstream was destroyed by a major flood in 1917, and it was decided to divert the railway line over the Great Kei Road Bridge. This dual arrangement of road and rail remained in place for 32 years until 1949 when the Great Kei Rail Bridge was completed further upstream.
The above information is largely condensed from here [1]. This site includes excellent photographs showing details of the bridge.
