1869 Formed by merger of 3 cable companies:
- The Danish‑Norwegian‑English Telegraph Co, formed in April 1868 to land and operate submarine cables between Denmark and England and between Denmark and Norway. It took over a Danish‑Norwegian cable laid in 1867. In September 1868 the company opened a direct Anglo-Danish cable between Soendervig and Newbiggin, near Newcastle.
- The Danish‑Russian Telegraph Co, formed later in 1868 with the same directors as the Danish‑Norwegian‑English Company, which had a concession to establish a Danish‑Russian cable system in addition to an assurance of a concession to lay a Swedish‑Finnish cable.
- The Norwegian-British Submarine Telegraph Co, which planned to lay a direct telegraph cable between Norway and England.
1870 Great Northern Telegraph Co ordered the cable to connect Vladivostock to Hong Kong from Hoopers Telegraph and India-Rubber Works; Siemens Brothers and Co carried out the armouring of this cable.
