Great Southern of India Railway

1853 The Great Southern of India Railway Company was established with its headquarters at England.

1859 The company constructed its first railway line connecting Tiruchirappalli to Nagapattinam - 78.5 miles

1860 The Broad Gauge line was brought into operation

1861 The Metre Gauge line was brought into operation

1865 99 miles in operation

1868 Constructed the section from Tiruchirappalli to Erode - 88.5 miles - via Kodumunda

1868 George B. Bruce, Consulting Engineer; Frederick Louis Dibblee, Engineer-in-Chief.[1]

1874 The company was merged with the Carnatic Railway to form the South Indian Railway with Tiruchirappalli as its headquarters. The city retained the position until 1908 when the company's headquarters was transferred to Madras. The broad gauge lines were converted to metre gauge.
