Great Work Mine

From Graces Guide

Godolphin Cross, Breage, Mount's Bay District, Cornwall.

Mine dates from at least 1540. [1]

It was a major tin producer in the 19th century. [2]

The workings occupy the saddle between Godolphin Hill and Tregonning Hill. Coordinates are the same as those of the Leeds shaft, whose engine house was recently (2005) restored. [3]

1689 Thomas Epsley first introduced blasting into mining at this location. [4]

Where Wheal Breage Lode passed from granite into greenstone, the tin ore it contained in the former disappeared instantly (Henwood, 1843). [5]
