Visit of the Iron and Steel Institute to the Iron, Steel and Engineering Industries of Manchester and District

Gresham and Craven Ltd., Salford.

The firm manufactures vacuum brake fittings of every description, locomotive and commercial injectors of all types, bilge ejectors, hydraulic, steam or compressed air ejectors, water lifters, deep well ejectors.

The works is self-contained, possessing its own machine shops, brass and iron foundry, press shop, and at present employs 470 men. A machine of particular interest is the 300 tons Taylor and Challen mechanical toggle press, capable of producing deep stampings up to 36" diameter and 18" deep.

The foundry is equipped with the latest type of moulding machines, mostly Zimmerman, a balanced blast cupola and Simpson sand plant.

A complete range of models of the various specialities is available for visitors and educational purposes, as well as a demonstration test rack where complete experiments can be carried out on braking by means of the vacuum automatic brake, on trains of any size up to 3,500 ft. long
