1858 Francis Wedge and Thomas Griffith purchased the Ebert and Loudon Machine Shop, on Fifth Street in Zanesville.

1870 Francis Wedge obtained a patent for his vertical portable engine.

Charles David Wedge (1858-1927) became the owner and manager of the business. He turned down an approach from Henry Ford to invest in car production and produce vehicles at the Zanesville factory.
