Herbert Henry Asquith, first earl of Oxford and Asquith (1852–1928), prime minister

1852 Born in Morley, Yorkshire, son of Joseph Dixon Asquith and his wife Emily (nee Willans)

He was registered at birth as Herbert Asquith, and was known by that name until he was about forty; the name Henry seems to have been added at an early stage.

1877 Married Helen Kelsall Melland (c.1855–1891)

1894 Married Margot Tennant in a society wedding. Margot was the sixth daughter of Sir Charles Tennant. Margot used the name "Henry" for Asquith and this practice became general.

1908 Became prime minister

1916 Resigned as prime minister
