1902 Appointed full-time lecturer in economic geography at London University, with responsibility for advising on the organization of a department of geography at LSE.
1903 Appointed the second director of the London School of Economics, simultaneously resigning as principal of Reading and giving up his Oxford extension work. He held the directorship until 1908.
1910 Elected as MP for the Camlachie division of Glasgow; he retained the seat until 1922.
1917 Re-elected as president of the Machine Tool and Engineering Association; had similar roles in many other bodies.
1920 Knighted
