H. Randles was educated at Manchester Central High School and Salford College of Technology. He joined the Manchester office of the Birmingham-based New Conveyor Co in 1952 as a project engineer dealing with most types of bulk handling equipment for the process and other industries. Following a licence agreement in 1966 with the Systems Engineering & Mfg Co of Houston, Texas, enabling the New Conveyor Co to manufacture and market a comprehensive range of pneumatic handling equipment, he spent some time in America learning the basic technology of pneumatic conveying.

In 1968, following the amalgamation between New Conveyor Co and Geo. W. King Ltd of Stevenage Mr Randles was appointed Sales Manager, Pneumatics Division, which specialises in pneumatic handling.
