Founded by William Hancock in 1807. Following his death in 1845, the brewery and 20 tied houses were taken over by his son, William, who also established a brewery in Cardiff. In 1891 he took three of his sons into partnership. Bought the Old Brewery in Tiverton in 1919 from Devonport and Riverton Brewery Co. Merged in 1927 with S. W. Arnold and Sons of Taunton to form Arnold and Hancock Ltd., which went into liquidation in 1934. Brewing continued at the brewery until 1959.[1]

The brewery buildings are largely intact, and are a prominent feature of the town.
