"HAROLD GEORGE DAVIS, whose death occurred on 12th November 1946, was elected a Student of the Institution in 1917 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1924.
He was born at Barry, South Wales, in 1893, and received his education at the Cardiff Technical School and at the University College of Wales, where he held a Science School Scholarship and also won a Metallurgy Tour Scholarship in 1914. His apprenticeship was served from 1909 to 1914 with the Barry Graving Dock and Engineering Company, Ltd. After a brief experience at sea as marine engineer he was entrusted with the charge of the engine progress branch of Messrs. Cammell Laird and Company's submarine department at Birkenhead.
He also acted as lecturer in mechanical engineering. In 1920 he was appointed senior draughtsman to the British Thomson-Houston Company, Ltd., of Rugby, and subsequently was promoted to the post of commercial engineer, in which capacity he was responsible for the preparation of schemes and tenders and was closely concerned with the electrification of railways. In addition, instructions to the firm's other drawing offices at Birmingham and Willesden passed through his hands. Sometime later Mr. Davis started an engineering business at Newcastle upon Tyne to which he devoted his entire attention until the end of his life."
