Harold Hodgkinson Broughton, Wh.Ex., was a very well-known member whose association with this Institution began in 1900 with his election as a Graduate. He transferred to Associate Member in 1910 and to Member in 1919. He was an authority on mechanical handling on which subject he had published many books.

He was educated at Higher Grade School, Huddersfield, and at Huddersfield Technical College, and served an apprenticeship with Kitson and Co., Ltd., Leeds, and Broadbent and Co., Huddersfield.

From 1904 to 1914 Mr. Broughton held the appointment of Head of the Electrical Engineering Department and Lecturer at Brighton Technical College; and from 1915 to 1916 he was Joint Editor of the Electrician.

He then joined Vickers, Ltd., of Westminster, and after a period of seven years as Chief Engineer of the Electrical Department, spent several years as the company's Resident Engineer in Canada.

In 1928 he set up in private practice as a Consulting Engineer, specializing in mechanical handling, cranes, and the handling and storing of grain, ore and coal. Mr. Broughton was a Member of both the Institutions of Civil and of Electrical Engineers.

Mr. Broughton was a very generous supporter of the Benevolent Fund of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and served on the Committee of Management of the Fund for many years.

His death occurred on 3rd June 1958 at the age of 76.
