Hendon Dock Bascule Bridge, Sunderland

From Graces Guide

This bridge spanned the junction of Hendon and Hudson docks. Each 'leaf' was 50 feet long and the bridge was raised by electric motors.

Stated to have been the first aluminium alloy bascule bridge.

Designed and constructed by Head Wrightson Light Alloy Structures Ltd F. J. Walker, heading the design team. Bridge foundations & related quay work were by W. G. Turriff. The engineer was W. H. S. Tripp. The channel it spanned was widened (from 60 ft. to 90 ft.) & deepened, so larger vessels could enter Hendon Dock.

Corrosion due to reaction between aluminium and steel components led to scrapping of the bridge in 1977.
