Henry Ainsworth

From Graces Guide

Henry Ainsworth (1859-1911) of Great Harwood Commercial Co

1911 Died. 'The death took place unexpectedly, yesterday afternoon week, at his residence, Holme Rook, Suffolk-road, Altrincham, of Mr. Henry Ainsworth, one the leading East Lancashire cotton manufacturers. Mr. Ainsworth, who was born at Blackburn in 1859, was managing director of the Great Harwood Commercial Co., and he was well known on the Manchester Royal Exchange. When he took over the control of the Great Harwood Co. in 1884, the firm owned only one mill and 500 looms, but under skilful management the company has made rapid strides, and has become one of the foremost cotton manufacturing firms in the country. The phenomenal of the Great Harwood mills, which are run on the co-operative principle, in which the workers have a financial interest, is due, no doubt, to Mr. Ainsworth's far-seeing policy and undoubted commercial abilities. Throughout Lancashire Mr. Ainsworth's name was known and highly respected, and his work in the cotton industry been one of the factors in Lancashire's success catering for the of our Indian Empire.'[1]
