Bruckshaw's Cheese Press
1862 London Exhibition: 'CHEESE PRESS, invented by Henry Bruckshaw and manufactured by the exhibitor; it is simple, strong, and durable, occupies small space, has no levers, weights, or wheels, as those in ordinary use; it is easy to manage, not liable to get out of order, and well adapted for exportation.'
See photos above. Other contemporary cheese presses used a system of levers and weights to obtain the required pressure. Bruckshaw's press had none of these, apparently relying on 'spring balance' arrangement to indicate the force provided by the screw. Presumably there was a coil spring pressing on top of the screw's nut, and a pointer fixed to the nut indicated the force. This would make for a simpler, smaller and cheaper press.
