Henry Eccles was born in 1886, and served an apprenticeship of five years with General Electric Co, Salford.

He then joined the motor department of British Westinghouse as a turner, and was subsequently employed as works manager by a number of automobile firms in the North of England.

During the war he was Examiner in the Northern Area for the Mechanical Transport Inspection Department, and subsequently became director and general manager of Salford Motors.

He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution of Automobile Engineers in 1921.
