HENRY FRANCIS MORAES was born in 1874 and received his general education at St. Mark's College, Chelsea, and his technical training at the Polytechnic, Regent Street.
He then entered the works of the Brush Electrical Engineering Company, Loughborough, as an improver and in 1895 he joined Messrs. Mirrlees, Watson, and Yaryan, of Glasgow, in a similar capacity. Most of his subsequent career was spent in the Malay States to which he proceeded in 1896, having received an appointment as Resident Engineer to the Penang Sugar Estates. In 1907 he joined the firm of Messrs. Osborne and Chappel, mining engineers, of Ipoh, Perak, as resident engineer of the Tanjong Rambutan tin mine; and in 1912 he was appointed manager of the Ayer Kuning Estate, Perak, which position he held till his return to England in 1922 on account of ill health.
He was altogether twenty-seven years in the Malay States, where he gained a considerable wealth of experience in connection with sugar machinery, and steam plant and prime movers for mining work. Mr. Moraes was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1904. His death occurred at Hove, Sussex, on 8th January 1942.
