Henry James Potter Burt

c.1798 Born in Wiltshire, son of Thomas and Betty Burt[1]
1827 January. Married at Potterne, Wiltshire to Rachel Ferris. They had two children: Fanny died aged 10 in February 1839; Henry Kent Ferris died aged 18 in 1847.
1827 Dissolution of the Copartnership between Henry Potter Burt and William Yorke, in the business of Edge-Tool-Makers and Smiths, carried on at Great Cheverell-Mill, near Devizes, Wilts; the business has been continued by the said Henry Potter Burt alone[2].
1831 Dissolution of the Partnership between, Thomas Burt and Henry Potter Burt, of Devizes, and of Great Cheverell, in the County of Wilts, Ironmongers and Edge Tool-Makers, by mutual consent; Henry Potter Burt would carry on the business on his own account[3]
1841 Iron founder, living in Southampton with his wife Rachel[4]
1846 Became an associate of the Inst of Civil Engineers
1851 In business at 238 Blackfriars Road, timber seasoning[5]
1851 Contractor, living in Southwark, with his wife Rachel Burt 52[6].
1853 Patent to Henry Potter Burt, of No. 2, Charlotte-row, in the city of London, Civil Engineer, for the invention of "improvements in portable houses."[7]
1853 Assoc. Inst. C. E.; read a paper to the Institution of Civil Engineers on preserving timber[8]
1855 His wife, Rachel, died in Lambeth[9]
1856 Married Frances Taylor in France[10]
1857 Birth of son Henry Parsall Burt
1859 Patent to Henry Potter Burt, of Charlotte-row, Mansion House, in the city of London, in respect of the invention of "improvements in railway carriages and waggons."[11]
1861 Merchant and contractor for creosoted timber, living in Streatham with his wife Frances Burt 29, and children Henry P Burt 3, William C Burt 1, Alice F Burt 4 months[12]
1861 of 238 Blackfriars Road, London[13]
1862 Patent to Henry Potter Burt, of Charlotte-row, Mansion House, in the city of London, for an invention of "improvements in protecting wooden posts from decay, more particularly applicable to posts for supporting electric telegraph wires."[14]
