HENRY LOWMAN BARGE, 0.B.E., was born in London on 7th February 1883.
He was educated at George Green's School, Poplar, the East London College, and the L.C.C. School of Marine Engineering, and at the age of sixteen was apprenticed to Messrs. Bullivant and Co., Ltd., wire-rope makers, contractors and engineers, passing through the drawing office and afterwards the works, both at Millwall and Warwick.
Amongst the work with which he was closely identified may be mentioned the construction of the mechanical haulage system adopted in the Harecastle tunnels of the N. Staffs Canal, and many other systems of haulages, torpedo net defences for the British and Foreign Admiralties, salvage plant, &c.
During the War he played an important part on behalf of the Company in carrying out special work for various Government Departments, and in recognition of this, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.
His death took place from pneumonia, at Haywards Heath, on 21st October 1918, in his thirty-sixth year.
He became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1910, and a Member in 1913; he also served as a Member of the Wire-Ropes Research Committee.
