"HENRY MAURICE SURTEES TUCKWELL, who was born in 1872, received his education at Mason College, Birmingham, where he also served a two-year apprenticeship with Player Brothers, Ltd. After gaining experience as improver to Tangyes, Ltd., engineers, Birmingham, and Maudsley, Sons and Field, Ltd., London, he served for two years in the Royal Navy as assistant engineer. For the next five years he held a number of brief engagements, such as launch engineer to the Daimler Motor Company, Ltd., Coventry, assistant to Mr. W. J. Wood, consulting engineer and marine surveyor, Grimsby, and outside engineer to Bumsted and Chandler, Ltd., Hednesford, Staffordshire.

From 1902 to 1907 he filled consecutively the positions of assistant works manager and works manager to John. I. Thornycroft, Ltd., Chiswick. After acting in this capacity for Joshua Buckton and Company, Ltd., Leeds, for six years he became a director of Tata, Ltd., London, purchasing agents for the Tata Iron and Steel Company, Ltd., India, for which firm he was engaged as representative until his retirement from active affairs in 1936. Mr. Tuckwell, whose death occurred on 16th October 1951, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1914."
