HENRY SHERLEY PRICE, who had been a member of the Institution since 1877, was born in London in 1846 and commenced his apprenticeship when fourteen years of age, with Messrs. Whitmore and Company of Wickham Market. During the eight years he was in their service his experience included the preparation of designs in connexion with the erection of iron, clay, and brick works at Stourbridge, and winding engines and plant for various firms and railway companies.
Later he entered the employ of Mr. Wheatley Kirk of Manchester, upon whose death he helped to establish the firm of Messrs. Wheatley Kirk, Price and Goulty, who installed the engines and boilers used at the Law Courts in London. The firm subsequently removed to London and Mr. Sherley Price was then joined by Mr. John Place, M.I.Mech.E., and, on the retirement of Mr. Goulty, by his sons as partners. The firm are well known as mechanical and electrical valuers, arbitrators, and engineers. Important valuations were carried out for the Government, including the expropriation of the Tanjong Pagar Docks, Singapore, and the valuation of part of the property of the National Telephone Company which was incorporated in the final award.
Mr. Sherley Price was for a time proprietor and editor of the technical periodical Electrical Plant.
His death occurred on 31st December 1932.
