1916 Obituary [1]

HENRY TONKINS died at his residence, 3 Lorne Terrace, Stockton-on-Tees, on May 18, 1916, at the age of sixty-one. He was a native of Pontypool, and had been engaged since an early age in steel furnace building.

He constructed amongst others all the furnaces at the West Hartlepool and Stockton Moor Works of the South Durham Steel and Iron Co.

He served on the old Stockton Town Council from 1896, becoming an alderman in 1909, and mayor in 1912. He was also a member of the Water Board and the Bridge Board, and a borough magistrate. He was a member of the Cleveland Institute of Engineers, and was elected a member of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1895.
