"HERBERT CHARLES BANKS READ was associated with H.M. Dockyards throughout his professional career including his apprenticeship, which he served as an engine fitter at Portsmouth, from 1899 to 1905. He continued in the same work for a further four years when he became a draughtsman, and for a period was engaged upon the same duties at the Admiralty.
In 1914 he was appointed inspector of engine fitters at Rosyth Dockyard, and five years later went to Hong Kong to take up a similar appointment in the Dockyard there. Shortly after his return to England in 1923 he was made foreman of the engineer branch in H.M. Dockyard, Portsmouth, and subsequently was promoted to be senior foreman on his appointment to Malta Dockyard in 1932. He returned to Portsmouth in 1935 and continued in the grade of senior foreman until his retirement ten years later. He was sometime lecturer in automobile engineering at the Portsmouth Municipal College of Technology, and since 1925, except for his period of service in Malta, had lectured on marine engineering at H.M. Dockyard School. Mr. Read, whose death occurred on 3rd February 1950 in his sixty-sixth year, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1928."
