"HERBERT EDMUND RILEY, who was born at Bradford in 1881, retained a connection with his native city during almost the whole of his lifetime. He was educated at the Bradford Technical College and served his apprenticeship from 1898 to 1891 with Messrs Hanson Carter and Company and with Messrs. Rogers and Kaye. He then took up an appointment as draughtsman with the United States Metallic Packing Company, Ltd., a position which he held for nineteen years, except for brief periods when he was employed in a similar capacity by Messrs. Alfred Herbert, Ltd., of Coventry, and Messrs. Sheffield Simplex Motors, Ltd. After acting as director of the Bradford Metallic Packing Co for three years he took up an appointment with Messrs. Jowett Cars, Ltd., for whom he was first engaged as an inspector.
Since 1929 he had been closely concerned, as principal draughts man, in the firm's production department with the design of jigs and tools and layouts. He continued in this work until his death which occurred on 6th July 1948. Mr. Riley was elected an Associate Member of the Institution of Automobile Engineers in 1932. For some forty years he taught machine drawing at evening classes under the Bradford Education Committee."
