Herbert Hanbury Smith-Carington

Born Herbert Hanbury Smith 28 Feb 1851 at Worcester.

Educated privately and at King's College, London, then served four years with Hardy and Padmore at Worcester Foundry.[1]

In 1874 he was appointed assistant secretary at Joseph Whitworth and Co. Four years later he was appointed Company Secretary.[2]

1878 His father, Richard, changed his name to Smith-Carington.[3] His children seem to have done the same at about the same time, but there is no formal record of the latter.

1887 appointed a director of Joseph Whitworth and Co.[4]

1897 on the merger of the companies, Smith-Carington was appointed a director of Armstrong Whitworth.[5]

1914 Appointed a director of newly registered High Speed Steel Alloys Limited.[6]

1917 Died 3 Mar 1917 at Grangethorpe, Rusholme, Manchester[7]
