HERBERT THOMPSON , Wh.Ex., whose death occurred at Sidmouth on 23rd December 1940, at the age of 71, had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1897. He attended classes at the Central Science School at Sheffield, and at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College, obtaining a Whitworth Exhibition in 1893, and numerous other prizes and exhibitions. He served his apprenticeship from 1886 to 1893 in his father's firm in Sheffield, remaining as works manager for a further two years, when he entered into partnership with his brother, and was in business as a master engineer for twelve years.
In 1905, he came to London where he devoted himself to the teaching of technical subjects until his retirement in 1934. After being an instructor in metal work at a London County Council central school for seven years, he was in 1913 appointed principal of an evening technical school at Limehouse. He subsequently held similar appointments at Kentish Town, Deptford, and Lewisham and was later appointed a lecturer at the Poplar School of Engineering and at the South Eastern Polytechnic.
