1854 Of Millwall, manufacturing chemist, with Alexander Angus Croll, William Daniel Owen of Millwall, and Richard Laming of the same place, manufacturing chemists, petitioned for extension of Croll's 1840 gas cleaning patent[2]

1861 Herman Dirs Mertens 41, solicitor, lived in Margate with Emma Dirs Mertens 12 Horman Deane Mertens 10, Louisa C D Mertens 8, Julia M Mertens 6, Owen D Mertens 5 and his sister Sophia D Mertens 30[3]
