1898 Died. 'The death of Mr. Hermann Eugene Falk took place at his residence, Catsclough, near Winsford, on Wednesday morning. By his removal there has passed away one of the most prominent men engaged in the salt trade during the past half-century. The firm of R. Falk, Senior, and Co. commenced business in 1840, and the subject of this notice started in his own name, in 1858, at Meadow Bank Works, Winsford, which were of an extensive character. He continued to conduct them until they were assigned to the Salt Union, Limited, in 1888, and since then his son, Mr. H. J. Falk, has been a director of the syndicate. The late Mr. Falk was thoroughly acquainted with the manufacture of salt, and had a considerable connection in the Baltic, to where in former days large quantities of English salt were shipped. He carried on his business in Liverpool, and was at one time one of the largest consignors from that port. Mr. Falk opened a mine at Winsford, from which more rock salt was despatched than from any previous Cheshire mine. He was an extremely energetic and successful man of business; of strong will and determination. For years he was a member of the Salt Association, and had had more to do with the Salt Chamber of Commerce since its foundation 40 years ago to the present than any other individual. Mr. Falk was a trustee of the River Weaver, and took a very active part in the navigation. He was one of the first to introduce steam on the river, and had built a series of iron vessels which carried very large quantities of salt. Many of them are now in the possession of the Salt Union.'[1]
