Makers of sauces, of 203 Ashted Row, Birmingham. Brewery: Stourport, Worcestershire. Maker of Pure Malt Vinegar and Worcestershire Sauce.
1870 Company established by J. Leslie Tompson making vinegar.
Partnership became Tompson, Berry & Co
1875 Renamed John Tompson & Co. Began to make pickles and sauces.
1876 Acquired a vinegar brewery at Stourport.
1879 Incorporated as a limited company: Birmingham Vinegar Brewery Co., Ltd.
1880 Introduced a Worcestershire sauce which took 2-5 years to produce, using 27 different ingredients.
The Worcester sauce was named after William Holbrook, manager of the north of England sales office.
1890s Birmingham Vinegar Brewery had started to produce a sauce that it called "Yorkshire Relish", but this was challenged by Goodall, Backhouse and Co who also used the name. The House of Lords ruled that only Goodall, Backhouse was entitled to use the term "Yorkshire Relish".
1900 Renamed Holbrooks, Ltd.
1914 Sauce manufacturers. Specialities: pure malt vinegar and Worcester sauce. Employees 600. [1]
1954 Birmingham Corporation compulsorily acquired the factory in Birmingham which prompted the directors to sell their British assets and concentrate on the Australian and South African interests. Holbrooks Ltd sold the UK business to British Vinegars Ltd, including the vinegar brewery at Stourport[2]
1970s the Holbrooks Worcester sauce was still on sale in Britain
