Homan Price Fenby (1852-1893)

Consulting mechanical engineer

1852 Born in Leeds, son of Joseph Fenby, mathematics teacher[1] [2]

1887 Description and diagram of a compound marine engine invented and patented by H. P. Fenby of the Manor House, Farnley, near Leeds. Each cylinder contains two pistons, which work in opposite directions, alternately approaching and receding from each other. The rod belonging to the upper piston passes through the lower piston rod.[3]. The following week's edition of Engineering included a letter from George Rudolph Bodmer stating that this type of engine had been patented by J. G. Bodmer (his grandfather) in 1834.[4]. Further correspndence followed from readers who offered other examples of engines using similar arrangements. Fenby responded at some length to address the comments, and in particular stating that 'I can assure Mr. Bodmer that my system of three cranks and double connecting-rod is not mentioned or shown in the late Mr. Bodmer’s patent, though it may be shown in the model he has in his possession ; neither is there any compound arrangement either in the patent or the model. I have no doubt, however, that the engines made on the late Mr. Bodmer’s plan did work well and without vibration at a high speed, and it gives me much satisfaction to know this, because it proves beyond doubt that my engine will be a success in this respect. ...' [5]

1888 Creditor meeting. 'In 1884 Mr Fenby commenced business in Leeds as a mechanical engineer, and be has taken out eight patents relating to corrugated fines, three to rotary steam engines, and one to tramway engine condensers. Licences bad been granted for the working of most of these patents.'[6]

1891 Living in Leeds with Elizabeth A Fenby 33, Vincent H P Fenby 5, Eric P Fenby 2[7]

1893 Died in Leeds
