Hospital Motor Squadron
1918 'Unnamed at the outbreak of war, the Hospital Motor Squadron consisted of a mere handful of motorists drawn together to help the great stream of Belgian refugees looking for sanctuary in this country. The corps had been founded and, night after night, motor owners in this corps transported their sorrowful burdens and helped the nerve-racked Belgian refugees to realise and appreciate the warmth of a British welcome. After the work with the refugees was finished, the Motor Squadron turned its attention to wounded soldiers, and was instrumental in setting a vogue for golf club houses and London West-end clubs entertaining large parties of our convalescent heroes. This work has been carried on without break for nearly four years.....The importance of carrying on these health rides to wounded soldiers, of whom 100,000 have been taken, cannot be too earnestly emphasised....'[1]
