1810 Born in Saltcoats, son of Alexander Allan (1780-1854)

At an early age Hugh was settled by his father in Montreal in the office of the agency of the Allan Line. Here Hugh quickly came to the front, becoming a partner, and ultimately head of the firm

1844 Married Maggie Smith of Montreal

Knighted, in recognition of the important services he rendered to Canada in promoting its maritime and general commerce.
