HUGH WESTERN was for several years chief inspecting engineer at the Sudan Government Office in London.
He was born in India in 1876 and educated at Rugby School.
In 1895 he entered the Swindon works of the Great Western Railway as a pupil, but in 1896 came to London for a year's study at University College; he afterwards returned to Swindon and completed his pupilage in 1899. He was then engaged as a draughtsman for six months, after which he was appointed assistant to the workshop superintendent of the Egyptian State Railways. Later he assisted the superintendent of the Luxor-Assouan extension, whom he eventually succeeded.
In 1911 he returned to London as assistant to Sir Arthur Webb, at the Egyptian Government Office, holding this position until the establishment of the Sudan Government Office, to which he was transferred on its formation.
During the War he was attached to the anti-aircraft section of the R.N.V.R.
He retired in 1931, owing to ill health, and died on 13th November 1934, at Great Waltham, Chelmsford.
Mr. Western was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1900 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1902.
