Hunslet Suspension Bridge
NO LONGER EXTANT
This was a cast iron through-arch bridge with a suspended deck. Constructed by George Leather between 1826 and 1832. It was built to take South Accommodation Road from Hunslet to the York and Selby Roads further North, avoiding the city centre.
Demolished in 1898.
An 1833 illustrated description is available here.[1].
See here, here, and here for photographs taken during dismantling in 1898-9. The last photo shows the cast iron cross members, incorporating diagonal bracing. See here for links to more images of the bridge from the Leodis website.
