Independent Gas Co

The Independent Gas Light Office, of 18 Tokenhouse Yard, London

The Independent Gas Light & Coke Co. was formed by Deed of Settlement in 1824 by ex-officers of the Gas Light and Coke Co, Messers Laing, Hinde and Hartley.

1824 Advertised for tenders for gasometer and for roof for retort house[1].

1825 Proposed to supply a district in Shoreditch, the Imperial Gas Co having declined to do so on the terms offered[2].

The works were situated on Albert and Laburnum Streets, Shoreditch, near the Regents Canal. The works were of interest as all of their mains were overhead. There were originally four holders, later replaced with one large one.

1829 General meeting of the Independent Gas Light and Coke Co of Haggerstone[3].

1860s One of 13 gas companies supplying gas in London[4]

1873 One of 9 companies supplying gas to the London metropolis[5]

c.1876 Amalgamated with the Gas Light and Coke Co[6]

1900 The works were closed and the site cleared; stove and meter workshops were erected.
