Indian Railways: The Early Lines

1853 April 16th. The Great Indian Peninsula Railway ran their first trains on a section between Bombay and Tannah (Thane).

1854 August 15th. The East Indian Railway ran their first trains on a section from Howrah to Hooghly

1856 July 1st. The Madras Railway ran their first trains between Veyasarpaudy and Walajah Road (Arcot)

1860 The Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway ran their first trains

1861 May 13th. The Scinde Railway opened connecting Karachi to Kotri

1861 The Great Southern of India Railway opened its first line between Tiruchirappalli and Nagapattinam

1862 The Eastern Bengal Railway opened its first section

1867 The first part of the Indian Branch Railway line between Oudh and Rohilkhand was opened.
