WWI The Wireless Experimental Station was set up at Biggin Hill.

1917 Biggin Hill was established as an airfield for wireless experiments but then became part of the London Air Defence Area, responsible for defending London against air attacks; air-to-air and air-to-ground telephony systems were developed there [1]

1918 The Royal Air Force Instrument Design Establishment was set up at Biggin Hill[2]

Developments in switches and radio direction finding were patented

1922 Moved to Farnborough
